When you apply for a loan or open a financial account, you are asked for your BVN, your NIN, a photo of your face and sometimes your bank statement. It can feel like a lot. Each check has a clear job, and knowing it helps you protect yourself.
Your BVN: proof that you are you
The Bank Verification Number links your identity to your bank accounts across Nigeria. Lenders use it to confirm your name, date of birth and photo match the person applying. Your BVN cannot be used to take money from your account. Only you can authorise a debit, with your PIN, card or a mandate you approve.
Your NIN: a second, independent check
The National Identification Number confirms your identity against the national register. Two independent records that agree make it much harder for someone to borrow in your name.
A selfie: stopping impersonation
A live photo is compared with the photo on your BVN record. It stops a fraudster who has your numbers but not your face. A good app guides you to take it in good light and never stores more than it needs.
Your bank account and statement: can you afford it?
A lender checks that the account you give is in your name, so loans and refunds reach you and nobody else. Your bank statement shows your regular income and outgoings, which helps the lender offer an amount you can actually repay. You can usually share it through a secure bank connection or upload a PDF from your bank.
Your credit record
Licensed credit bureaus hold a record of your past loans and how you repaid them. Lenders check it, with your consent, to see whether you have other debts. Paying on time builds a good record; missed payments stay on it for years.
How to protect yourself
- Never share your PIN, OTP or password, not even with someone who says they work for a bank or lender. Real staff never ask.
- Only give your BVN and NIN inside a lender’s official app or website, never by WhatsApp or phone call.
- Check that the lender is registered with the FCCPC and explains how it uses your data, as the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 requires.
- Be wary of any app that wants your contact list, photos or messages. A lender does not need them.
Identity checks take a few minutes, but they protect your money and your name. Done once, they also mean faster decisions on every loan after the first.
